Along time ago in a galaxy far far away...
Well, the reality is back in 1999 and the place is actually Skywalker Ranch in California. Home to the visionary director George Lucas who created one of the biggest movie trilogies of all time.
Then in the mid 90s word got out that the Star Wars movies were to get a prequel, excitement amongst fans grew until one particular day in May 1999 after decades of waiting, fans finally got to see the most anticipated film of all time... But instead of amazing space battles, a look into the Anakin Skywalker's fall from grace and his journey to the dark side, they got... an annoying 9ft alien by the name of Jar Jar Binks and some of the worst acting seen on screen in a long time from Jake Lloyd, the kid hired to play Anakin Skywalker. It’s so bad at times you feel Eddie Murphy's performance in Norbit should have bagged him an Oscar.
But in the cold light of day people came round to the realisation that any film that long in the waiting wasn't going to live up to the hype in our imaginations, no matter what was on screen it was unlikely to fully satisfy Star Wars fans.
Now 13 years later The Phantom Menace gets a new release and this time the only thing George Lucas has added is a whole new dimension. 3D. Now before you say "I've seen it so I'm not bothered" hear me out.
Yes, the film is the same as the dvd re-release with the exception of the digital Yoda that replaced the puppet for the blu ray edition. But filmmakers went through the painfully long process of going through the movie frame by frame over the past two years, to work out depth and distance between the foreground visuals and the background so as to create a realistic 3D experience without having the gimmicky effect of things jumping out the screen at you. The result is visually stunning and the attention to detail is clear, none of the migraine educing 3D conversion feel of "Clash Of The Titans" is seen here.
Also what’s interesting is, as someone who has enjoyed some of the 3D films of late, I was (as a massive Star Wars fan) concerned that this was just another excuse for releasing the film again. It's really not. 3D movies work best in animation and sci-fi mainly because they're not grounded in reality and Star Wars is no exception. Although I'm convinced it's based on a true story. If this hadn't had the care and attention it truly deserved in creating its new version then maybe I wouldn't be as excited, but here's the deal... If you've never seen The Phantom Menace on a big screen then you have to see this film. If you've seen it before and are not to bothered by 3D then you also have to see this film because it really does feel like a different movie and one that even though it still has Jar Jar and Jake Lloyd in, the extra dimension makes their annoyance less apparent.
Also it's Star Wars, and no matter what opinion you have on The Phantom Menace, Liam Neeson is fantastic, Darth Maul is one of the best baddies (although not in it enough) in cinema and who can't resist one of the greatest light sabre battles in the saga.
Also you never know when it will be back on a screen in a galaxy not to far far away from you again.
