The news follows revelations that Nicole Scherzinger and Steve Jones have also been dropped from the show.
A source told E! News: "She found out today".
"At this point, the only ones staying are Simon and L.A. Reid."
The changes to the show are a humiliating blow for Simon Cowell who has seen his decisions over-ruled by executives at the Fox Network. The triple axing is the latest in a string of disasters for the programme, which found controversy by ditching Cheryl Cole in its first month of auditions.
Paula said: "Yes, it's true; I won't be returning to The X Factor next season. I've learned through my longevity in this industry that business decisions often times overrides personal considerations.
"Simon [Cowell] and I, along with Fox and Fremantle, have been communicating about this for a while now, and I have absolute understanding of the situation.
"Simon is, and will remain a dear friend of mine and I've treasured my experience working this past season with my extended family at Fox and Fremantle.
"I want nothing more than for The X Factor to exceed ALL of their wildest dreams. This truly has been a blessing and I am most grateful."
Nigel Lythgoe, who is Executive Producer of American Idol tweeted "Shocked to see Simon has fired Paula Abdul, Nicole and Steve from the X-Factor."
Fox insisted on the changes after X Factor USA attracted poor viewing figures compared to The Voice and American Idol.
Mariah Carey and Will Smith are being touted as potential replacements for Paula and Nicole. Let us know who you want to see on the revised panel by leaving a comment below.
